Basin Electric is a recognized leader of wind energy development in the Upper Midwest. Through joint projects and purchase power agreements, we have added approximately 1,300 megawatts (MW) of wind energy to Basin Electric's generation portfolio, nearly doubling the cooperative's wind generation in the matter of a few years.

In addition to PrairieWinds 1 and Minot Wind in North Dakota and Crow Lake Wind in South Dakota, Basin Electric also owns and operates the Chamberlain turbines, two 1.3-MW turbines located north of Chamberlain, South Dakota.

Visit the Environment section of this website to learn about investments and technology at each generation site.

Other sources

Basin Electric purchases all of the energy from six wind projects owned and operated by NextEra Energy Resources (formerly FPL Energy), Juno Beach, Florida. The wind projects are located near Wilton (2 projects), Edgeley, and Baldwin, North Dakota, and Highmore and Groton, South Dakota. We also purchase energy from several other sources including Consolidated Edison, Novatus Energy, and Tradewind Energy, and wind-generated electricity from our Class A member Corn Belt Power Cooperative in Humboldt, Iowa.
