Dakota Gas Hosts North Dakota’s Legislative Energy Development and Transmission Committee

Members of North Dakota’s Energy Development and Transmission Committee (EDTC) gathered on Wednesday, September 5, at Basin Electric subsidiary Dakota Gasification Company, located near Beulah, North Dakota.

“This was an opportunity for Basin Electric to inform the committee about the current and future generation and transmission projects that are underway, as well as the cost of these projects,” said Jean Schafer, Basin Electric senior legislative representative.

Consisting of 12 members, including six state senators and six representatives, the committee focuses on shaping the state’s energy policies. As part of the meeting, eight committee members were given a tour of Dakota Gas and the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, the only commercial-scale coal gasification plant in the United States that manufactures natural gas using Lurgi gasification technology. The Synfuels Plant captures more CO2 from coal conversion than any facility in the world and is a participant in the world's largest carbon sequestration project. Attendees were provided a tour of the CO2 sequestration well.

“This is an incredibly fascinating facility, and it should be a part of the Energy Development and Transmission Committee’s regular meeting rotation,” said State Senate Majority Leader David Hogue, chairman of the committee.
