In 2022, Basin Electric employees located at its Headquarters raised $17,530 for the Great Plains Food Bank through their Casual for a Cause campaign, to which employees can donate money in exchange for wearing jeans every day.
The Great Plains Food Bank works closely with community members, volunteers, and donors who have made it their mission to serve those in need, while working towards the goal of a hunger-free North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota, by 2037. For every dollar raised, 95% goes to providing needed food assistance.
Statistics show that 3,507 volunteers for the Great Plains Food Bank distributed 11.9 million pounds of food last year, which provided 9.9 million meals to communities across North Dakota and Clay County. Locally, the Bismarck facility had 1,330 volunteers who put in over 4,100 hours to serve surrounding communities.
While these numbers are encouraging, the need for food assistance increased by 14% in 2022, and 47% of those served in Burleigh and Morton counties were children.
“The number of people in our community who are dealing with food insecurities is growing. We are proud to be able to be part of the solution and provide a little comfort for our community members in need,” said Jennifer Holen, Basin Electric’s charitable giving coordinator. “Basin Electric lives out our cooperative principle, concern for community.”
