Explore Basin Day: Inspiring the next generation of professionals

Basin Electric employees visit with students about job opportunities

Basin Electric employees visit with students about what it's like to work in the Energy Markets and DCC Department.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the age-old question we pose to children and young adults, and the Basin Electric human resources department hopes the response will be, “I want to work at Basin Electric!”

Teams across the cooperative participated in “Explore Basin Day”—a career day tailored for high school students, showcasing job opportunities at Basin Electric and its subsidiaries. Approximately 600 students from Bismarck Public Schools were in attendance.

“Our goal is for students to recognize the broad range of careers available at Basin Electric and connect students with our industry experts, encouraging them to engage and ask questions that will guide them on their career journey,” Corey Helm, talent acquisition specialist at Basin Electric, says.

Basin Electric’s human resources department is expanding its focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) to raise awareness about career opportunities available within the cooperative, specifically targeting middle and high school students.

“By engaging younger students early, we aim to spark their interest in the diverse and rewarding careers within the energy industry,” Helm says. “Our goal is to inspire the next generation of workers and leaders in the energy sector, helping them understand the exciting possibilities Basin Electric has to offer.”

Approximately 40 Basin Electric and Dakota Gas employees attended Explore Basin Day, and informational booths were set up to showcase human resources, communications, energy markets, finance, legal, engineering, resource planning and rates, information technology, transmission systems maintenance, operations, and maintenance.

“We are grateful to our dedicated employees for taking part in this event,” Helm says. “These efforts are crucial in attracting the next generation of talent to our organization and helping them understand the rewarding careers that await them here at Basin Electric.”
