Basin Electric is a recognized leader of wind energy development in the Upper Midwest. Through joint projects and purchase agreements, we have added approximately 136 megawatts (MW) of wind energy to our portfolio over the past several years.
In addition, Basin Electric contracts to buy all of the energy from three wind farms owned and operated by FPL Energy. The FPL wind farms are the North Dakota I Wind Energy Center near Edgeley and Kulm, the South Dakota Wind Energy Center near Highmore and the newly constructed Wilton Wind Energy Center north of Bismarck, ND. The North Dakota I Wind Energy Center and the South Dakota Wind Energy Center each have a maximum output of 40 MW. The Wilton Wind Energy Center has a maximum output of 49.5 MW.
Basin Electric, in cooperation with several of its member systems, has constructed two wind projects, one near Chamberlain, SD, the other near Minot, ND. Each site has two 1.3 MW wind turbines.
The Chamberlain Project is jointly owned and operated with East River Electric Power Cooperative, a Class A member.
The Minot Project is jointly owned and operated with Central Power Electric Cooperative, also a Class A member.
We also purchase wind energy from two other sources:
