Becoming a preferred supplier

Supplier Quality Assurance Process

The Supplier Quality Assurance Process (SQAP) selects suppliers with the objective of measuring performance, promoting improvement and acknowledging achievements.

Basin Electric’s procurement division is responsible for coordinating pre-qualification, and evaluating and developing specific suppliers. All employees of Basin Electric and its subsidiaries are encouraged to evaluate supplier performance.

Supplier quality evaluation process

Two primary sources of information regarding supplier performance are the supplier performance update and the supplier quality evaluation.

Supplier performance update

This is a simple comment form or electronic message that allows any Basin Electric employee to comment on a supplier’s performance. A SQAP administrator immediately shares this information with the supplier.

Supplier quality evaluation

This is used to formally gather and record supplier performance for a specific period. Evaluations are scheduled by assigned procurement staff and are completed by employees who have frequent involvement with specific suppliers and their performance. Various performance factors, based on the type of materials or services provide, are rated on a scale of 1-5.

Once all available performance data has been collected and analyzed; the ratings are totaled to determine supplier classification. Preferred Supplier is the highest SQAP classification; next is Quality Supplier; followed by Conditional Supplier. Supplier status is determined by points accrued in the evaluation.

The final step in the process involves providing performance evaluation grades to the supplier. The Supplier Quality Report Card, a composite of all of the scored evaluation factors measured, is used for this purpose.

Along with the quality rating for each factor, the report card may acknowledge accomplishments in specific areas or provide recommendations for improvement.

Supplier recognition

The final element of SQAP is supplier recognition. Basin Electric recognizes the highest levels of supplier performance annually with its Preferred Supplier recognition awards.

Preferred Supplier recognition award

The Preferred Supplier award is made annually to suppliers that consistently provide service that exceeds Basin Electric's expectations.
